Remarkably, the remains of not just the three expedition members — their bodies gnawed by scavenging polar bears — were found, but diaries, cameras, and film as well. The poles had been conquered at long last, after decades of exploration during which humans repeatedly tried, failed and finally succeeded in reaching each of these most remote corners of our world. After just two days of flight, the balloon lost hydrogen and plummeted to the ice. Andrée believed that the best way to reach the North Pole would be during the “gentle” polar summer when winds blew predominantly northward and were not too strong.
